Oregon was the first state in the nation to adopt automatic voter registration, an innovative policy that automatically registers voters when they interact with the DMV. This is a major paradigm shift, as it requires voters to opt out of registering to vote, as opposed to opting in. This recent article in the New York Times describes New Motor Voter, as the program is called, as a “success.” The article also points out that automatic voter registration is catching on; at the time of its publication, five other states have passed AVR policies!
