Every ten years, using freshly collected census data, states begin the process of redistricting – redrawing the lines for state legislative and congressional districts. Redistricting is important. It affects how communities are represented, determining whether a community remains a solid voting bloc or is split up, making it harder or easier for that community to elect representatives to protect and advocate for its wellbeing.
With the completion of the 2010 Census, the redistricting process begins again, and in 2011 and early 2012, states will redraw their district lines. That means the 2009 and 2010 state elections will directly affect redistricting. The culture of collaboration and mutual accountability fostered by state tables is essential as the country moves into these upcoming elections as well as state-specific redistricting battles, and State Voices is committed to providing organizations the tools and training they need to fight for a fair process.
