Shy Averett serves as State Voices' Executive Associate. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Shy joined the NAACP at the age of 12. During her 14 years with the NAACP Shy became the Youngest State President for Michigan at the age of 15 and was the youngest member of the NAACP National Board of Directors at the age of 18, where she served for 8 years. Shy attended the University of Toledo and Wayne State University where she studied Computer Information Systems and African American Studies. She went on to become the youngest Regional Field Director for the Midwest Region III for the NAACP, where she directed and led over 5,000 youth and college students across the country. She has also served on several mayoral and presidential campaigns. In her 16 years of service Shy has been awarded the Gloster B. Current National Leadership Award, State of Michigan Youth of the Year, and the Highly Esteemed Kentucky Colonel Leadership Award, a national award that is awarded yearly by the Governor of Kentucky which has been previously given to likes of Muhammad Ali, President Bill Clinton and Tiger Woods for exemplary national leadership and service.
